Community spotlight: Making birthday celebrations possible for homeless children

October 2017

We all know the simple joy of a birthday celebration — cake, gifts, and time with friends.

When Megan Yunn learned that a young lady she was tutoring named Beverly had never had her own birthday party or cake, she knew something had to be done. So, Yunn launched Beverly's Birthdays to provide birthday celebrations for children in the Pittsburgh area.

Today, the organization partners with more than 44 agencies throughout the Pittsburgh region to throw birthday parties for children and families facing difficult times. Last year, Beverly's Birthdays threw 120 parties for more than 2,000 children and their friends and family.

"We all have birthdays, and everyone should know that they are loved, cared for, that they're noticed and special," said Yunn, whose organization was honored with the PA State Education Association's Celebrating Excellence Community Leader Award earlier this year.
